Holiday of the Month

Mother’s Day

They support us, they care for us, they raise us to be the best people we can be. They are kind, caring, and wise. They remind us that we have potential, and they always guide us in the right direction. They are loving and lovable. They are all the hard-working and resilient mothers of the world. 

This year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on May 9th. While you should show your mother that you love and appreciate her every day, it doesn’t hurt to dedicate a day to show how much you care about her. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to prepare for a memorable day. You can always just spend the day with your mother. We’ve created a few ideas on how you can celebrate Mother’s Day. 

  1. Make her a meal

Making a meal is a great way to show how much you care. It doesn’t have to be a very expensive or complicated dish, just try to make something or use ingredients that you know your mom loves. You can also try eating your meal outside or having a picnic. 

  1. Make a homemade gift

Making a homemade card, making a customized picture frame, or even making a drawing are all very sentimental gifts that you can give your mom. Making a gift can feel more genuine than if you were to buy one. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect because your mom will really appreciate the effort. 

  1. Do something that she loves

Your mom is always helping you out and adapting for you, so why not do something for her? If she likes to go on walks, then go on a walk with her. If she likes to garden, then help her in the garden. If she likes to watch movies, then watch one of her favorite movies with her. This shows that you really know her and care for her. 

No matter how you’re spending mother’s day this year, just remember that your mom loves you and puts a lot of effort into taking care of you, so it’s important to return the favor. We hope you and your mom have a wonderful mother’s day this year!

May’s Quote

This month’s quote is: “Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” I picked this quote because it is very motivating. In the moment, challenges can feel really daunting and discouraging. It can be hard to understand that facing those challenges makes you a stronger person in the long run. Always try to remember that working through your struggles helps make your life more rewarding!


Craft

Make a DIY Mouse Pad

This craft is a great project if your’e bored and have an old t-shirt laying around your house. After making this craft, I found that the Mouse Pad was very useful and now I often use it while using my computer.

What You’ll Need

  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Old T-shirt or old clothing
  • Cardboard

Drawing Prompt

Contour Drawings

For this month’s drawing prompt, try to make a contour drawing! Contour drawings can be pretty relaxing to draw, but they are definitely a lot harder than they look. When making your drawing, try not to lift up your pencil at all! It is supposed to be one continuous line. (When making my drawing, I ended up cheating a little bit with that rule though!) If you can’t make it all one line, challenge yourself to rarely pick up your pencil instead. For my drawing, I laid down the colors where I wanted them to be in my drawing before drawing the line art. I think this gave the drawing an interesting look. How to Cope With Anger in a Healthy Way

You feel like a volcano that’s about to erupt. It seems like everything is going wrong. Anger boils inside of you. You want to destroy anything and everything in your path. But before you do anything, you pause… 

Everyone gets angry, and that’s okay, what you are feeling is completely normal. Things go wrong, and that’s frustrating, but it’s important to understand how to control your emotions when you feel upset. The reason why it’s important to control these emotions is because you don’t want to end up doing something you will regret. In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to lash out at people or things around you. This can be a harmful way to cope with your emotions. Here are some healthy ways to control your anger. 

  1. Take deep breaths and get a glass of water

It may seem like a very simple thing to do, but it should always be the first step when you feel frustrated. When you’re under pressure, a great way to relieve it is by taking some time to calm your body down. Take your mind off of whatever is bothering you and take a moment to concentrate on your breathing.

  1. Go outside or go somewhere where you can be alone

It’s a good idea to give yourself a break by taking some time to leave the situation. Going outside can be very calming. You can look at the plants and animals around you to relieve your stress. Try to watch the birds flying through the sky, or look up at a tree’s beautiful branches and leaves, or just sit on the grass and close your eyes. Going to a different environment for a while can help you collect your thoughts. 

  1. Channel your anger into something new

Sometimes when you are angry, you can use those emotions to create art. You can write your thoughts down into a journal or make a poem. Try splattering paint on a canvas or making a cool form of abstract art. You could even try writing a song or story. Expressing yourself with your emotions can actually help you get more ideas and create genuine art. Try to think about ways where you can let all your emotions out while still maintaining a healthy environment for yourself and others around you.  

After taking all of this in, you stop and take a deep breath. You bring a water bottle and a notebook outside with you. 15 minutes pass and you feel ready to take on the situation again. 

Going outside is a great way to calm down when you’re feeling angry. You can take a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature and collect your thoughts.

Recipe

Healthy 4 Ingredient Breakfast Cookies

These breakfast cookies make a wonderful quick and easy snack that you can enjoy in the morning. (Or any other time!) They are nice and chewy and are sweet enough despite having no sugar in them! The flavors from the banana, peanut butter, and dark chocolate pair together very well! They are also not dry or super sweet like the ones you might find at a store. Total Time: 20 minutes

Servings: 12

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled or Old Fashioned oats
  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips

Directions

  1. In a bowl, mash your very ripe bananas. If your bananas aren’t ripe enough yet, you can actually put them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (in case of any spills) and bake them at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes. The outside peel should be completely black. Then, you can cut them open and the banana inside will be very soft and sweet. I used this method when making my cookies and they turned out great!
  2. Add the peanut butter and mix.
  3. Now mix in the oats. The consistency should be quite thick and sticky. If you find that your mix is a little too thick, you can add in a splash of almond milk and stir.
  4. Now add in your chocolate chips!
  5. Wet your hands slightly and roll the dough into balls. I was able to make a dozen cookies. Then, flatten out the balls into your desired shape. You can also add some extra chocolate chips on top if you’d like! These cookies do not spread out in the oven, so don’t be afraid to keep them close to each other.
  6. Bake them at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until visibly darkened. Take them out of the oven and let them cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy!
