How to Save Our Oceans and the Animals Living in Them
Our oceans are home to approximately one million different animal species however, over 18 billion tons of plastic flow into the ocean each year. Because of overfishing and pollution, over a million marine animals die each year. It’s up to us to prevent the amount of plastic that goes into the ocean.
The first way you can help is by using the browser extension OceanHero. OceanHero uses the money it makes through ad revenue to buy ocean-bound plastic through their partner, Plastic Bank. They also provide opportunities for those who are living in poverty. We use OceanHero ourselves and highly recommend it to you! Click here to install OceanHero: https://oceanhero.today
Commercial fishing is also becoming a significant problem in the decline of marine life. We read a very insightful book that does a wonderful job of explaining the threats of overfishing. The book is called World Without Fish. You can get the book here: https://www.amazon.com
Another more hands-on thing you can do to help is to bring fabric gloves and some paper bags next time you go to the beach. Then pick up any trash/ plastic that you find. If you see anything that can be recycled, wash them out and put them in a separate paper bag, and recycle it. If you see anything that can’t be recycled, put it in the other bag and throw it away in the trash.
These simple acts of kindness can really impact the populations of marine life.

Empowering Activity
Recognizing What You Love About Yourself
This activity is quick and easy but it is effective. It helps you feel calm, relaxed, and most importantly, it helps you feel better about yourself! Stand in front of a mirror. Look at yourself in the mirror and point out all the things you like about yourself whether it be your hair or your eyes or even your hands. You may find that it is difficult to point out good things about yourself. That’s totally okay. Keep pointing out things you appreciate about yourself until you feel calm and at ease. This activity helped me feel a lot better, especially when I wasn’t feeling the best. It’s always good to take a moment and appreciate what you have.

Color of the Month
The color of the month is dark pink. I decided to pair it with lime green.

Craft
LEGO Sculptures
Do you have any LEGOS lying around? If you do, it’s time to start crafting! You can send us pictures of your finished sculptures at sandazine@gmail.com!
Step 1
Find or draw a picture of what you are building. I decided to draw mine. Finding a reference makes building your sculpture a lot easier, especially if you are making a more detailed sculpture.

Step 2
Start building! This part is where you get to be creative, use whatever colors or pieces you want! You can build a more complex sculpture too. I made a gradient heart sculpture and a sculpture of a character from a show that I like.

Step 3
Take a picture of your sculpture and send it to us at sandazine@gmail.com! If you send in your picture, we will have it featured on our website and in the next issue (with your permission)! We would love to see what you came up with!

Drawing Prompt
Draw a Spot in Nature
It can be as abstract or as realistic as you want. You can take a picture of your drawing or draw it digitally, (I used a free app called Ibis X to make mine.) then send it to us at sandazine@gmail.com!

Recipe
Stained Glass Cookies
These cookies not only look amazing but are a great snack for when you are craving something sweet!
Makes 12 cookies (Extra dough can be frozen)

Ingredients
- About 12 Jolly ranchers (Or any hard, clear candy)
- Cookie-cutter (I used a star)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 stick unsalted butter (melted)
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
Directions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix butter and sugar until smooth. In a large bowl, mix salt, baking powder, and flour.
- Add eggs and vanilla extract the butter and sugar mix. Mix well. Gradually add in the mixture of salt, baking powder, and flour. Mix until the dough is a smooth ball-like shape.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll out dough on a flat surface and use a cookie cutter to cut out about 12 cookies.
- Cut out a hole in the middle of each cookie. I used an old metal candle holder to cut out the shape, but really anything in a small circle shape works!
- Put a Jolly Rancher (or any other hard candy you’d like) in the center of each cookie. Put the cookies in the oven for 11 to 12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
